2020 has been an unpredictable year. In Mar 2020, when people all over India were wishlisting / making future plans , everything came to a standstill when Covid scenario forced a lockdown all over the country. A sudden uncertainty was introduced to everything around us, as all of us got into an act of protecting ourselves from an unknown enemy by stepping out of our home only for the most essential services. Six months on, the lockdown has been getting slowly released. However, for some, the problems that started in March, have only worsened with every passing day.
The pandemic brought the blood supplies all over the city to a screeching halt with zero to minimal blood donation camps during the lockdown period.
Children affected from Thalassemia who used to get a routine transfusion every 14 days before covid lockdown, have been getting it only once a month, thus leading to them getting unconscious due to lack of HB. For women giving birth to children, families have been scrambling to get donors for the past few months. For dialysis patient who used to get their transfusion done every week or ten days and multiple cancer affected children, the search for blood donors has just gotten more and more intensive for families and blood banks
Doctors have been one of the greatest warriors in this covid crisis. However, blood donors also play a huge role in supporting a healthcare system. If blood donations did not exist, medicine as we know it would be so different; the whole system would collapse. With minimal to zero blood camps for major blood banks in Chennai in the last six months, many came forward and directly donated in the Blood banks across the city, to ensure that one of the most essential services (the blood banks) do not collapse.
From April 15 till date, about 353 blood donors responded to our CRK co-ordinators and donated blood to make sure around 253 patients (more than 90% of which are children) received their treatment on time. A special thank you to all such amazing people, who have gone out of your way and braved the sting of the needle to partake in such a selfless act of giving blood. As we are staring at a second wave of the pandemic, you are needed now more than ever.
