Being from a farming background I always love to be surrounded by green cover. I used to plant small saplings and veggie plants around my home in my native town. After coming to Chennai; I had always wished to go back to my home to see those plants. After Vardah cyclone I could see empty streets without any green cover or shades. The streets that I go to my office were so hot during day time. I knew Government was not going come with a better solution to fix it up. Then I chanced upon this wonderful group of volunteers in Facebook and attended an event. Everyone in the group was energetic and they really wanted to contribute to make a better and greener future. Best part with this team is growing saplings on their own with small places available which inspired me a lot. Not able to attend events regularly and I thought of setting up small nursery in my home. Started a small nursery 7 months back in my terrace and gave 100+ saplings in the first batch to Ainthinai. Neighbours used to water the saplings when am not around. And the second batch was a tragedy lost 70+ saplings to pigeon and bad weather condition. Now my nursery is have 40 saplings hope to grow huge and big. Thanks for Inspiring, together we can make this world a better place to live.
I grow plants for many reasons: mostly for happiness. seeing them grow will give you positive vibe in your life , plants never give up , plants always find a small crack of sunlight and a glimmer of hope to grow. Gardening is one of my hobbies, after moving to hostel -life, couldn’t find way to do. At that time Ainthinai came up with a great idea called GROW YOUR OWN SAPLINGS (GYOS). In GYOS event, I collected few seeds (Pungai, puvarau, sara kondarai, vagai), red soil, manure and empty milk cover from Ainthinai team. Initially I had sowed 10 seeds (mostly pungai and puvarasu) and kept all under sufficient sun light place, after couple of weeks; most of the seeds got germinated except sarakondarai and vagai. Then I have moved to my new hostel, where there was no place to keep my saplings in a safer place. I had to keep saplings outside to provide sufficient light. There was an old man from agriculture background family who was working as a security for our hostel. After I kept saplings outside, he was so curious to know why I am growing these saplings while I stay in hostel. Then I explained to him about CTC, ainthinai and GYOS. he was so inspired about ainthinai’s work, then he help me to put a shed using cardboard and other waste materials for saplings to protect from excess sun light. We decided to grow more saplings, then I collected more seeds, red soil and manure from sohlinganalur nursery. Every day I pour water while going office and after returning from office, during day time my security anna had taken care of my all saplings. After it’s grown more than 2 feet, we have changed the base cover, added more soil and few manure. Without his support I wouldn’t have grown 40+ saplings and achieved 80 % of success rate. That’s how we have grown 40+ saplings I haven’t faced much problem while growing saplings except red soil shortage and space issue. My neighbor was inspired by our work, so he gave me few sandle wood tree saplings. GYOS not only inspired me, it’s inspired my hostel maid, security man and neighbor to grow their own plants.
Through GYOS (CTC) I got the trainings & methods to grow the tree from seed. GYOS has plant the interest on me to grow some trees. They though me to plant a tree is more important than maintaining it. Now I am growing few samples also I adapt a new habit of collecting seeds wherever I go. Currently I formed a small community and insisting everyone to grow atleast one tree in life time. As beginning of this initiative we have plant a sapling in my office and we are pouring water daily and maintaining on regular basis. Thanks GYOS to make my life meaningful.
I love all green events of Ainthinai, especially the collection of seeds during summer as part of “Grow your own Saplings“.Variety of seeds like “Neem, Pungai, Poovarasan, Yanai KunduMani, Naval, Vaagai, Sarakondrai” became so special to me during the seed collection drive. Learnt the method to raise the saplings at home from Ainthinai and implemented it at my terrace. A portable seed bed was set up with sand; black soil and dried leaves. Seeds were put into the seed bed by making a hole an inch deep depending on its sprouting period. Every morning watering the seed bed was a bonding activity which brings me peace, and eliminating all other stresses. Each seed had its own sprouting period and the Neem seed stood first in the list which had a speedy sprouting process (where seeds were soaked in water over night before they were into the process). It was a divine feeling looking at the green seed pushing its neck out of the bed and opening its heart.
Finally the day had come and the heart of seeds opened to a new young sapling which rose to see the wonderful world outside. Regular watering was done to strengthen the saplings which were widening its green arms and feathery fingers to this world. The saplings were filling me with peace, love, joy with their sky kissing appearance every day.Transferred the knowledge to kids at home and who happily involved in green activities at home.A day had come and they were repacked from bed and safely handed to the hands of Aithinai for further care and maintenance. The 6 pillars so we call it: trees help clean the air we breathe, clean the water we drink, provide habitat for biodiversity, provide social impact (jobs), improve health, and help regulate our climate.
